Guess Di Word

A daily Patois word game

How Guess Di Word works

Guess Di Word is a free, daily word-guessing game in the style of Wordle, built on the RebelOne Patois dictionary. You have six tries to find a five-letter Jamaican Patois word. After each guess the tiles show how close you were.

  • Green — the letter is in the word, in the right spot.
  • Gold — the letter is in the word, but in a different spot.
  • Black — the letter is not in the word.

A new puzzle arrives every day at midnight, wherever you are. Miss a day and you can play it from the Play more menu, which also has practice words in four, five and six letters.

Every answer is a real Patois word

The answers are not made up for the game. Each one is an entry in the Patois dictionary, and when the puzzle ends you get its meaning, pronunciation and an example sentence, plus the meaning of every Patois word you tried along the way.

Patois has no single official spelling, and the dictionary records the spellings people actually use. So if you type another spelling of the answer that we list, the game counts it as correct. You can also guess any word you like, English included: only the answers are always Patois.

Tips for a first game

Patois is often English sounded out, so try saying a word aloud: mawnin is morning and bredda is brother. Watch for doubled letters — aa, oo and ee are common — and for endings such as -a and -y. If you are stuck, the lightbulb button at the top right of the game can show the category or the meaning of the word. Hints show up next to your result if you share it.

Past answers

The words from earlier puzzles, each with its dictionary entry.

  • #2 · Waata — Water — the Patois pronunciation of 'water', with the vowel opened out
  • #1 · Ackee — A soft, pale-yellow fruit whose ripe arils are cooked as a savoury vegetable
