Meaning
The Jamaican coney (hutia) — a shy, brown, rabbit-sized rodent that is the island's only surviving native land mammal apart from bats. It lives hidden in the bush and rocky hills, especially in the Cockpit Country, coming out at night to feed, and it was once hunted for its meat. Now rare and protected, the coney is seldom seen, a living link to the wild creatures the Taíno knew, and a small emblem of Jamaica's threatened natural heritage.
