Meaning
Two linked senses. In church, a senior leader or officer, often ranking above a deacon and helping oversee the congregation. More broadly, any respected older person whose age and experience command deference — 'respect di elder dem' is a core value. In Rastafari too, 'elder' names a senior, wise brethren. Age and standing both earn the title.
