Overstand
Also spelled: ovastand, overstanding
Meaning
To understand — but recast so the word affirms rising rather than being beneath. Rastafari reason that true comprehension lifts a person up, so one should 'overstand' rather than 'under-stand'.

Origin
A word-sound replacement typical of Rastafari Iyaric: the 'under' in 'understand' is felt to imply being below, so it is swapped for 'over' to reflect enlightenment and upliftment.
How it's used
Rooted in Rastafari speech but now used more broadly in conscious reggae and diaspora slang. Compare 'downpression' for 'oppression', built on the same logic.
