Reasoning

noun REE-zn-in ˈriːznɪn

Also spelled: reasonin

Meaning

A discussion, especially a deep or spiritual one — a session where Rastafari gather to talk through scripture, livity and current events, often over a chalice. More than casual conversation, it is a shared search for truth.

Examples

  • “Wi hol a reasoning bout di situation.”

We had a deep discussion about the situation.

  • “Come mek wi reason pon it.”

    Come, let's talk it through.

'Reason' is also used as a verb.

  • “Di reasoning gwaan till mawnin.”

The discussion went on until morning.

Origin

From English 'reasoning', but narrowed in Rastafari use to name the specific practice of communal, exploratory dialogue.

How it's used

Central to Rastafari community life. A reasoning is collaborative rather than an argument to be won.
