Link up
Also spelled: linkup, link-up
Meaning
To meet up with someone, make contact, or connect socially. It stresses the arranging and coming together of people, often casually, more than a formal appointment would in English.
Examples
-
“Mek wi link up lata dis evenin.”
Let's meet up later this evening.
'mek wi' is the hortative 'let's'.
-
“Link mi when yuh reach town.”
Contact me when you get to town.
'link' alone can mean phone or message someone.
-
“Wi did link up a di party.”
We met up at the party.
'did' marks past tense here.
Origin
From English 'link' plus 'up', extended in Jamaican and wider Caribbean speech to mean social connection and meeting.
How it's used
Informal and everyday among friends. 'Link' by itself is also used for messaging or calling, and 'a link' as a noun can mean a contact or connection.
