Meaning
To knock down or strike down — 'lick' (hit) plus 'down'. Most often said of being hit by a vehicle: 'car lick him down' means a car knocked him down. It also means to demolish or fell (lick down a wall, lick down a tree), and figuratively to defeat or bring someone low. 'Lick' on its own is any blow or hit.
