Wash board

noun WASH BOARD waʃ boːd

Also spelled wash-board, scrubbing board, jukking board

The ridged board used for hand-washing clothes — you rub the soaped garment up and down its corrugated surface to scrub out the dirt, over a tub or 'wash pan'. Before washing machines, the wash board (and plenty of blue soap and elbow grease) did the family laundry, and 'washday' at the board, tub, and clothes-line was hard, sociable work.
