Meaning
A woven basket or rack hung from the ceiling above the fireplace, used to store and slowly smoke-cure meat and fish in the rising heat and smoke of the cook-fire — an old-time way of preserving food without refrigeration. The kreng-kreng kept the household's dried and smoked provisions safe and dry up out of reach.
