Meaning
A small, homemade kerosene ('oil') lamp — typically a bottle or tin with a wick poked through the lid — that gives a dim, smoky flame. In the days before electricity reached every district, the kitchen bitch lit up kitchens, verandahs, and homework by night. Cheap and makeshift, it is a nostalgic symbol of old-time country life.
