Meaning
Good morning — the standard morning greeting, and, importantly, a courtesy that manners require. In Jamaican culture you greet before you speak: to enter a shop, a bus, or a yard, or to address an elder, without first saying 'gud mawnin' (or 'gud evening') is considered rude. A child is taught to 'say gud mawnin' to every grown-up, and skipping it draws a sharp correction.
