Meaning
To cry, weep, or wail loudly — and also to shout or cry out sharply. To bawl is to cry hard and openly, as a child bawls or a mourner bawls at a funeral; to 'bawl out' is to cry out in pain, alarm, or protest. The word carries the full, loud, unashamed sound of it, from grief and pain to a cry of 'murder!' It is one of the plain, strong everyday words for crying out.
