Tarpon

noun TAAR-pan ˈtaːpan

Also spelled taarpan, tarpum

A large, powerful silver fish with big shining scales, found around coasts, harbours, and river mouths — famous as a hard-fighting sport fish that leaps when hooked. Its flesh is bony and not much prized for eating, so tarpon is mostly known for the fight it gives the line-fisherman.
