Meaning
A folk belief that if a broom sweeps over your foot while someone is sweeping, it brings bad luck — most commonly that you will never marry, or (in another version) that you will end up in prison. If it happens, the remedy is to spit on the broom, or to sweep your own foot back, to undo the jinx. A well-known everyday superstition surrounding the broom.
