Meaning
To cast the evil eye — to bring harm on someone (especially a baby or a thriving person) through an envious or malevolent look. A baby that suddenly sickens or frets for no clear reason is said to 'get overlook'. It is the 'bad-eye' or 'mal-yeye' at work, and mothers guard babies against it with charms (a jet bead, a red string) and rituals to 'take off' the overlook.
