Meaning
Cheap canvas-and-rubber shoes — plimsolls or sneakers of the plainest, most affordable kind, the sort worn to school, for sports, or for knocking about. 'Puss boot' is an old, half-teasing name for these humble shoes, and though the exact image behind the name is unclear, the term has long stood for the no-frills rubber-soled shoe that everybody could afford. It is worn without shame and often with real style.
