Prep school

noun PREP SKOOL prɛp skuːl

Also spelled prep-school, preparatory school

A private preparatory school for primary-age children, contrasted with the government-run 'primary school'. In Jamaica 'prep school' carries a note of status and expense — parents who can afford it send their children to prep to give them a stronger start and a better shot at the top high schools. 'Prep' and 'primary' mark a real social divide in education.
