Meaning
A huge tropical fruit with knobbly green skin and sweet golden fleshy pods inside, eaten ripe as a fruit. The pods are fragrant and chewy; the large seeds are sometimes boiled or roasted. Grown in Jamaican yards and country districts, jackfruit is a seasonal treat picked straight from the tree.

Origin
From Portuguese 'jaca', ultimately from Malayalam 'chakka'; the fruit long cultivated across the tropics including Jamaica.
