Meaning
Nanny of the Maroons — the 18th-century Maroon leader and Obeah-woman who led the Windward Maroons of the Blue Mountains in their war against the British, and Jamaica's only national heroine. Revered as 'Granny Nanny' or 'Grandy Nanny', she is a towering symbol of resistance, freedom, and African spiritual power; her likeness is on the Jamaican $500 note (the 'Nanny').
