Meaning
A local strongman who controls a single street corner or small patch of territory — a step below the bigger 'area don' who rules a whole community. The corner don holds sway over his little turf, settling disputes, taxing or protecting the business on it, and commanding the young men who hang there. The word 'don', borrowed from mafia talk, marks the mix of feared authority and rough order such figures hold in the inner city.
