Carry belly

phrase KA-ree BEL-lee

Also spelled carry-belly

To be pregnant. 'Carry belly' is the plain, everyday way to say a woman is expecting. Adding 'fi' and a man's name says who the father is, so 'she carry belly fi him' means she is pregnant by him.

  • Mi cousin a carry belly, di baby due inna June.

My cousin is pregnant, and the baby is due in June.

  • She carry belly fi him, an dem a get married.

She is pregnant by him, and they are getting married.

  • Nuh mek har lif nutten heavy, she a carry belly.

Don't let her lift anything heavy, she is pregnant.

An everyday phrase, said plainly. 'Belly-woman' names the pregnant woman herself, and 'breed' is the blunt word for a man getting a woman pregnant. See Belly-woman, Breed.
