Bright

adjective BRIGHT braɪt

Also spelled brite, bright

Beyond 'clever' or 'shining', in Patois 'bright' most often means cheeky, forward, and over-confident — presumptuous beyond one's place. 'Yuh too bright!' means 'you're too forward / you've got some nerve'. It can also keep the standard sense of intelligent.

  • Yuh too bright fi ask mi dat.

You've got some nerve to ask me that.

  • Di bright likkle bwoy chat back to di teacha.

The forward little boy talked back to the teacher.

  • She bright, she pass all har exam.

She's clever, she passed all her exams.

From English 'bright' (clever/shining); Patois adds the dominant sense of 'cheeky/forward/presumptuous'.

Chiefly 'cheeky/forward' ('too bright'); can also mean intelligent. Context decides. Compare 'facety', 'fresh'.
