To snatch or grab something quickly in one swift motion — often to take it slyly or steal it. A pickpocket 'swipe' your phone; a quick hand can 'swipe' the last dumpling off the plate before anyone notices. From the fast, sweeping movement of the grab, 'swipe' (or 'swips') is about the speed and stealth of the taking.
