Meaning
The tiny biting midge that swarms on beaches and near the shore, especially in the evening — so small you can barely see it, but its bite itches fiercely and long. Sandflies are the bane of a beach lime at dusk, and country wisdom says to rub on coconut oil or bay rum, or light a smoky fire, to keep them off.
