Ras

noun RAS raːs

Also spelled ras, rasta

An Ethiopian title of nobility meaning 'head' or 'prince' — as in Ras Tafari Makonnen, the pre-coronation name of Emperor Haile Selassie I, from which 'Rastafari' takes its name. Adopted as a title of respect before a Rastafari brethren's name (Ras Michael, Ras Kumi), it honours dignity and Black royalty. (Distinct from the vulgar curse 'raas'.)

  • Dem call him Ras Michael out a respect.

They call him Ras Michael out of respect.

  • Ras Tafari a di title Selassie bear before him crown.

Ras Tafari was the title Selassie bore before his coronation.

  • Big up every Ras an empress.

Salute to every Ras and empress.

Amharic 'ras' (head/prince), an Ethiopian noble title; 'Ras Tafari' (Prince Tafari) gave Rastafari its name. Not to be confused with the vulgar 'raas'.

A respectful Rastafari/Ethiopian title before a name. Note the clash with the curse word 'raas' — different word. See [[negus]], [[raas]].
