A senior student given authority to help keep order among the other students — a mark of trust and standing in the British-style Jamaican school system. Prefects supervise lines, corridors, and younger pupils, report misbehaviour, and wear a badge or tie to show their rank. To 'mek prefect' is an honour and a step toward head boy or head girl.
