Meaning
A pit latrine — the outdoor toilet built over a deep dug pit, standard in country districts and older yards without indoor plumbing. Also called a 'pit', outhouse, or by older folk connected to the days of 'night soil' collection, it is a plank seat over the hole in a small standing shed. The indoor bucket alternative was the 'po' (chamber pot).
