Meaning
A central Rastafari symbol standing for Emperor Haile Selassie I, Ethiopia, and the strength and dignity of African people. The lion represents Selassie's title 'Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah' and appears on flags, art and clothing across the movement.

Origin
From the biblical title in Genesis and Revelation, 'the Lion of the tribe of Judah', which was among the official titles of Ethiopia's emperors. Rastafari take Haile Selassie's lineage as fulfilment of that prophecy.
How it's used
Both a religious symbol and a widely worn emblem of Black pride. Treat it as more than decoration when writing about it.
