Meaning
Home-cured tobacco twisted into a long, thick rope and sold by the length, cut off to order — the old country way of buying tobacco for a pipe or roll. Dark, strong, and pungent, jackass rope was a fixture of the market and the corner shop, coiled up on the counter, and older smokers still ask for it by name. The odd name simply marks it as coarse, plain, everyday tobacco.
