Meaning
A large basket or pannier for carrying farm produce and goods, especially the pair of woven baskets slung across a donkey's back to bring provisions from the field or to market. A 'hamper' of yam or oranges is a big load; by extension, a heavy quantity of anything. Central to old-time country transport and trade.
