Meaning
A square, hand-beaten frame drum of Maroon and West-African heritage, and the music and dance tradition built around it. The gumbay drum is sacred in Maroon ceremony, used to summon ancestors and mark celebration, and it survives in Accompong's traditions and in Jamaican folk performance.
