Meaning
The steep side or edge of a gully — the sloping bank of the deep drainage ditch or dry watercourse that cuts through Jamaican towns and country alike. The gully bank is where rubbish piles up and bush grows, where children play and cut across, and where board shacks sometimes cling; it floods and rushes in heavy rain. Life 'pon di gully bank' or 'gully side' is shorthand for the rough, poor edge of things.
