Meaning
Mist or cloud settled low over the ground — thick, damp, grey air that hides the road and the hills. Fog is common in the high, cool interior, in the Blue Mountains and the Cockpit Country, where a whole district can vanish into it in the early morning or after rain. Travelling through fog on a mountain road is slow and eerie, and the word carries that sense of a familiar place gone strange and half-hidden.
