Meaning
Chatting, toasting, or rhyming rhythmically over a riddim on the microphone — the Jamaican art that grew from sound-system 'toasting' into dancehall. Note the key difference from other countries: in Jamaica the 'deejay' is the vocal artist who chats the lyrics (like U-Roy, Yellowman, or a modern dancehall artist), while the person who plays the records is the 'selector'. Deejaying is a direct ancestor of rap.
