Meaning
Callaloo — the chopped leafy green (in Jamaica, the leaves of amaranth or of the dasheen/coco plant) — steamed down with flaked salted codfish, onion, scallion, tomato, and pepper. A wholesome, everyday breakfast dish, lighter and cheaper than ackee and saltfish, often eaten with fried dumpling, boiled banana, or bammy. Plain 'steamed callaloo' without the fish is the common vegetarian version.
