Meaning
The buttocks, backside, or bottom. On its own it is fairly mild, roughly like 'bum', and it appears in everyday words such as 'batty rider' (very short shorts) and 'batty an bench' (inseparable friends). It is also, however, the root of a number of coarser terms and of a well-known and virulent anti-gay slur, so its compounds range from the harmless to the hateful. The plain word for the backside, it is documented here with that caution about the offensive terms built upon it.
Examples
-
Di baby fall pon him batty.
The baby fell on his bottom.
The plain, mild sense.
-
She wear a batty rider shorts.
She wore very short shorts.
'batty rider' names a style of very short shorts.
Origin
From English 'bottom', shortened and reshaped to 'batty'. It forms part of harsher compounds like 'battyclaat' and the slur 'battyman'.
How it’s used
Mild by itself, but the source of vulgar and derogatory compounds. 'Battyman' is a serious homophobic slur — offensive and hateful — and should be understood as such.
