Meaning
A crowded inner-city yard of small rented rooms sharing one common yard, kitchen, and standpipe, where many poor families live packed close together. A defining setting of Kingston's ghetto life, immortalised in reggae and Jamaican theatre, the tenement yard is a place of hardship and tight community both — noise, quarrels, and shared struggle, but also neighbourliness and looking out for one another. It stands, with the common yard, at the heart of the downtown world from which so much of the music and the culture sprang.
