Meaning
A tough, flexible woody vine (or a whip made from it) used as a switch for beating — even more feared than the tamarind switch for how it bends and stings without breaking. The supple-jack's very suppleness ('supple') is what made it a dreaded instrument of old-time discipline. The plant also had bush-medicine and walking-stick uses.
