Meaning
The chayote — a pale-green, pear-shaped squash with a mild taste, a staple of the Jamaican pot. It goes into soup, is boiled or steamed as a vegetable, or stewed down; its soft, watery flesh takes on whatever seasoning it cooks with. Cheap, plentiful, and often grown on a yard vine.

Origin
