Bamboo

noun bam-BOO bamˈbuː

Also spelled bambu, bamboo joint

The tall, jointed, fast-growing cane that grows in dense clumps along Jamaican rivers and roadsides — put to a thousand uses: building and scaffolding, fencing, fish pots, furniture, rafting on the Rio Grande and Martha Brae, and cooking (a 'bamboo joint' of rice or a bamboo cup). At Christmas, a length of bamboo becomes a loud 'bamboo bazooka' fired with carbide. Endlessly useful and part of the landscape.
