Meaning
Dreadlocks — the ropes of matted, uncombed hair worn by Rastafari as a sacred symbol of the covenant, African identity, and the 'lion's mane', grown following the Nazarite vow not to cut the hair. To 'grow locks' or 'lock the hair' is to begin the journey; a person with them is 'locksman', 'natty', or 'dread'. Now also worn widely as a style, but rooted in deep Rasta meaning.
