Likky-likky

adjective LIK-ky-LIK-ky ˈlɪki ˈlɪki

Also spelled licky-licky, liki-liki

Greedy for food — always wanting to 'lick' at whatever there is to eat, and especially at other people's food. A 'likky-likky' person eats greedily, begs a taste of everything, and cannot keep their hands off the pot, and the word can imply a real lack of self-respect around eating. The doubling of 'lick' pictures the eager, repeated licking of a greedy mouth, and it sits with 'craven', 'greedy', and 'wanga-gut' in the rich Jamaican vocabulary of the shameless, grasping appetite.

  • Di likky-likky bwoy always a beg food.

The greedy boy is always begging for food.

  • Nuh be likky-likky, wait till dinner ready.

Don't be greedy, wait until dinner is ready.

  • Him so likky-likky him eat off everybody plate.

He's so greedy he eats off everybody's plate.

A reduplication of 'lick' (to lap up food) — one forever licking after food, hence greedy.

A teasing or critical word for greed about food; compare 'wanga-gut' and 'craven'.
