Duncehead

noun DUNS-hed ˈdʌnshɛd mild

Also spelled dunce head, dunce-head, dunce

A stupid or unintelligent person; someone who does poorly at school or 'cyaan learn'. 'Dunce' and 'duncehead' are common Jamaican put-downs, and 'dunce' has become a loaded word in the island's debate about 'dunce culture' — the worry that some youth glorify not studying. A sharp insult to someone's intelligence.

  • Nuh act like a duncehead, study yuh book.

Don't act like a dunce; study your books.

  • Him fail cause him a duncehead inna class.

He failed because he's a dunce in class.

  • Dunce culture nah help di yout dem.

'Dunce culture' isn't helping the youths.
